4 Life-Affirming Facts About Keeping a Wormery (That’ll Make You Want To Get One!)
2 min readMar 14, 2022
Wormeries are not just for primary school projects; they are an amazing space-saving, climate-protecting bundle of fascination. I started keeping a wormery a few years ago and here’s my five-point run down to sell you on all things worms!
- They’ll chomp through your food waste each week helping to solve one of the climate problems — organic waste. I’m always amazed at what they get through. There’s been a bit of a worm-debate about the natural carbon cycle. All the big worm brains agree that worm composting is far better than slinging your food waste in the landfill.
- They have amazing life cycles you can watch in real-time. I was amazed when I first saw worm eggs (perfectly round, I think!) and worm babies (mini rice noodles!) and you’ll be so proud when one of yours becomes a big bruiser in their prime!
- You get cracking compost for your pots, mini-gardens and tubs. Seriously, the stuff they produce is brilliant. I’m a total novice really in the garden — but there are great resources out there with in-depth details, I particularly like https://theurbanworm.co.uk/ — chapeau!
- They’ll turn you into a regular life saver when out walking, especially after rain. Whenever you come across a worm somehow stranded in a London pavement puddle (perhaps having been dropped by some over-ambitious robin…?), you’ll be drawn to scoop them out and find some nearby muddy patch to rehome them. This does look a bit weird, I’ll admit.
- Seriously though, we ‘wormed up’ because our local council didn’t (and still doesn’t) do food waste collection and our little London space wasn’t big enough for a compost heap. I love them, and hope this inspires you to think about what worms could bring to your life!
